James Johnson, JD
James Johnson is the Assistant City Auditor for the City of Long Beach. In that role, James assists the City Auditor in directing and overseeing all audits and other responsibilities of the office. His duties include representing the office in the absence of the City Auditor, planning audit projects, reviewing and presenting audit reports, and prioritizing areas for potential review.
Previously, James was the Senior Policy Advisor for the Long Beach City Clerk Department. In that capacity, he worked on a variety of projects and cost-saving initiatives, such as revising outdated municipal elections requirements to reduce excessive printing charges, helping commissions operate more effectively and transparently, and seeking more competitive pricing from City vendors. James also advised the City’s Charter Amendment Committee in the first successful structural charter reform effort in over twenty years.
Prior to working for the City, James practiced law at an international law firm in Los Angeles, where he focused on complex and commercial litigation. He also maintained a significant pro bono practice and helped obtain a settlement in a major international slavery and trafficking case. Before attending law school, James served in the policy division of the California Governor’s Office.
James has an Economics degree from Harvard University and a law degree from U.C. Berkeley School of Law, where he was a member of the honor society (Order of the Coif).
