Welcome to the Myrtelle L. Gunsul Conference Room exhibit which is displayed in the City Auditor's Office at Long Beach City Hall. The exhibit comprises a "Journey Wall" highlighting Miss Gunsul's journey to Long Beach and a "Career Wall," illustrating her remarkable career as the City Auditor from 1919 to 1951.

The Dedication of the Myrtelle L. Gunsul Conference Room

Long Beach City Auditor Laura Doud welcomed over 200 community members as well as city, county, and state officials to the dedication of the Myrtelle L. Gunsul Conference Room.

The Conference Room contains an extensive exhibit of the life and career of Miss Gunsul. Miss Gunsul was elected in 1919 and retired in 1951 after 32 years of being City Auditor. Her service to Long Beach was actually longer because she was Deputy City Auditor for 4 years before being elected City Auditor.

City Auditor Doud noted, "As Miss Gunsul said, 'Public office is public trust.' Our office takes this trust seriously, and we are committed to ensuring that taxpayers get the most for their hard-earned tax dollars. The Conference Room is now a living tribute to Miss Gunsul's extraordinary life and commitment to public service in Long Beach. By dedicating this Conference Room to her, we will keep her values and principles alive in our memories and in our daily actions."

On reading about the upcoming Open House in the newspaper, Betty Short Andreatta contacted the City Auditor's Office about her aunt, Miss Nell Short, who was on staff in the City Auditor's office during the tenure of Myrtelle L. Gunsul. City Auditor Doud was pleased to welcome Mrs. Andreatta and her daughter at the event. Mrs. Andreatta presented some of her aunt's audit memorabilia, including Auditor's Annual Reports from 1923 and 1936, to City Auditor Laura Doud who was pleased to accept them on behalf of the Office.

Research into the history of the Office of the City Auditor is ongoing. Anyone with information or photographs relating to former City Auditors is encouraged to contact the Office at (562) 570-6751.

Visitors are welcome to view the exhibit in the Myrtelle L. Gunsul Conference Room. Viewing is by appointment only as it is a working conference room. Please call (562) 570-6751 to schedule an appointment.
